HUD-VASH is a collaborative program between HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance with VA’s clinical case management and supportive services for homeless Veterans.
These services are designed to help homeless Veterans and their families find and sustain permanent housing and access the health care, mental health treatment, substance use counseling, and other supports necessary to help them in their recovery process and with their ability to maintain housing in the community.
HUD-VASH has an interdisciplinary team including social workers, a nurse, a peer support specialist, SUD specialist, and housing support specialist. HUD-VASH also utilizes a Housing First model, meaning that the goal is to first identify safe, stable housing for veterans without prerequisites for employment, recovery, etc., and address these needs through supportive services once the veteran is safely inside. HUD-VASH is a permanent supportive housing intervention as well, so these services will be provided to veterans on a long-term basis determined by their ongoing needs for support.
Resources + Support:
HUD-VASH has a Housing Support Specialist on the team that specifically supports veterans in the housing search process alongside their social worker. Our Housing Support Specialist provides education to veterans about the housing market and search process, and educates landlords about the supportive services and benefits of working with the HUD-VASH program. Each veteran’s individual housing needs and concerns are taken into consideration to identify the best, long-term housing intervention available for them as well. HUD-VASH has been able to secure housing for veterans who remain stable in housing there for many years, some over a decade! The housing support specialist also regularly communicates with our partner landlords and works closely with our interdisciplinary team to follow-up on any tenant concerns.
